The Professional Paradox

Mandatory fun

The away day was today. Attendance optional, in the way that breathing is optional.

We did an ice breaker where you say your name and a fun fact. I have worked with these people for six years. Dave from finance revealed, for the sixth consecutive year, that he once met Gareth Southgate.

Then came the trust exercise. You know your organisation has a healthy culture when they have to bus you to a barn in Surrey to practise trusting each other with foam blocks.

The bar opened at five. Warm white wine, one token each. The senior leaders had a separate area, presumably to trust each other more privately.

O and the feedback survey arrived before the coach got back. How would you rate today’s connection and energy?

Ten out of ten. Never do it again.
