Called into a meeting on diversity and inclusion this week. Occasionally there’s a meeting about something I’m actually interested in.
But when I looked around the zoom call (thank you universe for letting it be a zoom) I realised that yet again it’s being led by white western middle aged men who proceed to tell the actual diverse people on the call how to be inclusive to our diverse workforce.
A cheer is then heard from another guy on the call who talks to us about his work on our black network group and how he leads it.
Am I listening to this correctly?! A white middle aged man who only hires white people from his region of the UK leads our black network… right.
My smile, turns to a sneer — he can’t even let black people run their own network.
To conclude — diversity starts with white middle aged sheltered men telling diverse groups how to be diverse.
Brilliant.
O and he can do comms too.
